Bahubali 2 : The Conclusion - Review

Why Kattapa.. Why?? A question probably 1.4+ billion people have been quizzed about for the past 2 years.. Well, I assure you, the wait for that answer was worth more than the stunts, songs or a budget of 2.5 billion INR.. It probably was a combination of one of the most emotionally and frustratingly epic scene I've ever witnessed in Indian cinema.. Just the grandeur of that one scene gave for some goosebumps; for some a prolonged tear jerker; and for some absolute silence with awe.

The Conclusion is helmed on 5 shoulders.. #Prabhas, #Sathyaraj, #RanaDaggubati, #AnushkaShetty and #RamyaKrishan, who have all done their parts well. But the strength of the movie is Prabhas who literally lived the character. The support cast have all done their parts brilliantly.

A Beautiful, Fiery, Explosive, Phenomenal, Epic Conclusion!!!

Performance wise this is a Prabhas film all the way who gave his blood sweat and complete dedication in portraying the Dual Role of Father and Son.Rana was also brilliant as Bhalladeva with veteran actors Satyaraj and Nasser were very convincing.Ramaya had an author backed role which she did splendidly.Anushka looked beautiful and totally owned the character of Devasena.However Tammanna was totally missing only appearing in the climax.

This movie had a good mix of soulful songs, witty one liners, amazing sound effects, bgm, beautiful locations (both original and visually created), grand sets, hard hitting stunts and touching moments placed aptly.

I had read earlier that the VFX is in par with #TheLordOfTheRings and #HarryPotter.. I would say it is top notch for Indian cinema.

There is so much more to the story of Baahubali than the WKKB question. The story takes us through the Love blooming between Amarendra Baahubali and Devasena, then delves into the Politics in the Mahishmathi Kingdom and some shocking revelations ensure the pace is kept high and then comes the sequence of Kattappa killing Baahubali. From then, the story becomes predictable and turns into a clichéd revenge drama. But the greatness of SS Rajamouli as a top- notch technician of the movie lies in how well he keeps the audience engaged and absorbed into the story. The entire narrative of Baahubali has been fleshed out and the emotions are handled very well indeed. The sequence of Kattappa and Baahubali has been used for maximum dramatic effect.

Wherever there are no strong emotions to keep us focused, Rajamouli resorts to Visuals.A separate mention has to go to the Visuals of the movie. The movie is visually stunning. So stunning indeed that it is one of, if not the most beautiful Indian film so far. Every frame of it oozes grandeur. Some of the sequences, especially the Visuals of the Romance song between Devasena and Baahubali match the standards of Hollywood. No doubt about it.

However, that is where the comparison with Hollywood must end, in all fairness. The movie is Indian at its core and the story, which heavily draws inspiration from the famous characters of Maha Bharatha is not new to the audience. It is an age old tale of Sibling Rivalry set in a different world and its saving grace are the great characters that populate the world of Baahubali. The actors have done a great job with stellar performances from Anushka, Satyaraj, RamyaKrishna, Nasser and Rana. They all acted very well. But ultimately it is Prabhas that steals the show. His performance is apt, controlled and is almost always on point. He never over-does his role.

All the technicians that have worked for the film have done a fabulous job as well. The music by MM Keeravani is wonderful and his BGM takes the experience to new heights. Senthil Kumar's cinematography is another big plus for the movie.

The pacing of the movie is amazing but it falters towards the end, as what happens becomes predictable and in the final battle, the viewers are treated at the same time to wonderful visuals and clichés. However, the events leading to the climax more than make up for it. Ultimately the ending is a safe one and the final sequence neatly ties it to the beginning of the first movie. Very sublime.

Finally, Baahubali is today's blockbuster, tomorrow's classic and is definitely one of the most important films for Indian movie industry. Watch it for the Visuals and Rajamouli's superb narration. It is an Indian film with an Indian story and is suffused with Indian sensibilities. That makes it a breathe of fresh air.

Heath Ledger's father reveals his son's tragic last words

When Heath Ledger died in 2008, just months before the world got to see his sneering, paint smeared face in the role that would define him, the world was left in mourning. Now, 8 years after his tragic passing due to an accidental overdose or prescription drugs, Ledger’s father Kim spoke about his son’s struggles and the last words he said to his sister.

“It was totally his fault. It was no one else’s. He reached for them. He put them in his system. You can’t blame anyone else in that situation,” Kim told Daily Mail Australia. “That’s hard to accept because I loved him so much and was so proud of him.”

Ledger was found in his New York apartment after having wrapped shooting on The Dark Knight, the film that would earn him his posthumous Oscar for his performance as The Joker. He was in the middle of production on Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, the strenuous shooting schedule leaving him drained.

“There’s so much pressure on them to perform so even though your body is telling you that it’s not good and needs time, it’s like ‘just take these painkillers and keep going,’” Kim said. “That was the case with Heath. He had to be back on set to finish (the next day). They were doing night shoots in the freezing cold and he had a weak chest anyway. He’d caught this (cough) and just couldn’t shake it but he thought he had to because he wanted to get the movie done.”

Kim said that Ledger’s sister spoke to Heath the night before and warned him not to mix drugs. “He said, ‘Katie, Katie, I’m fine. I know what I’m doing.’ He would have had no idea,” said Kim.

Shahrukh Khan to reprise Ilayathalapathy Vijay's role in the hindi remake of Theri

Actor Vijay's Tamil film Theri is rumoured to be remade in Hindi with Shah Rukh Khan reprising Ilaiyathalapathy's role and the film will be directed by Rohit Shetty.

Ilayathalapathy Vijay is still basking in the success of his latest Tamil film Theri, which has earned a whopping Rs 150 crore at the box office.

Now, the latest buzz is that Vijay's Theri will be remade in Hindi and is speculated that the project might be directed by Rohit Shetty.

Also, it is being rumoured that the Baadshah of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan might reprise the role of the immaculate IPS Vijayakumar in the Hindi remake.

Rohit Shetty has had many successful collaborations with King Khan including films like Chennai Express and the recent Diwale.

Sreedhar Pillai, a film trade analyst, in a recent article published in The Hindu, stated that Rohit Shetty is likely to remake the Hindi version with Shah Rukh Khan playing the lead.

Rohit Shetty has officially announced his next with Shah Rukh Khan. Notably, SRK is currently shooting for Anand L Rai's next, where the actor is touted to play a dwarf.

Earlier, Vijay's Thupakki was remade in Hindi as Holiday: A Solider Is Never Off Duty, which was a super-hit at the box office.   

If the reports are true, it would be exciting to see the Dilwale actor in this out-and-out commercial entertainer.

Anushka Sharma, Shahrukh Khan to share screen space for the third time for Imtiyaz Ali's next

The speculation over the female lead in Shah Rukh Khan's film with Imtiaz Ali has been put to rest. The makers have announced that Anushka Sharma has been roped in for the plum role.

The film will mark the third time that Anushka Sharma will share screen space with SRK - after Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Jab Tak Hai Jaan. The film will see Shah Rukh play the character of a tour guide. However, details about Anushka's character in the film are still under wraps.

The movie is expected to go on floors by the end of July. A major chunk of the film will be reportedly shot at Budapest, London and Punjab. The feel-good film will chronicle the life of SRK's character as he undergoes a journey of self-discovery.

The music of the film will be composed by Pritam. The Red Chillies Entertainment production will hit the screens in 2017.

Apart from Imtiaz Ali's film, Shah Rukh is also expected to start shooting for his films with Aanand L Rai and Aditya Chopra. The projects will see the superstar play the characters of a little person and a warrior, respectively.

24 years of shahrukh khan: From bollywood's famous villain to the king of romance

He started out as a young boy from Delhi who dreamed of becoming a household name in a country full of superstars. Twenty-four years after he made his debut in Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan today embodies the rags-to-riches story. His tale of struggle up the ranks, without any big names backing him, is one that is often retold.

It has been 24 years since the release of Shah Rukh Khan's first film Deewana (1992) - where he played a supporting role opposite Rishi Kapoor. What bagged him a role in this star-studded film was his performance on television shows - namely, Fauji andCircus.

While Shah Rukh Khan was first noticed for his performance in Deewana, it wasBaazigar (1993) that established him as a force to be reckoned with. His portrayal of an unstoppable antagonist in the Abbas Mastan-directorial helped him land the role of an obsessed lover in Darr (1993) directed by Yash Chopra - a film where he overshadowed 1990s superstar Sunny Deol.

After Darr and Baazigar, filmmakers flocked to Shah Rukh, offering him roles with shades of grey. Another film which won him an award for the best actor in a negative role was Anjaam (1994).

Interestingly, Bollywood's 'King of Romance' earned his nickname only after Aditya Chopra approached him to play the lead in his debut film, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

His contemporaries and the industry as a whole were shocked at Chopra's choice. Shah Rukh himself was sceptical about taking on the role. Close friends, including Ratan Jain - the producer of Baazigar - warned him not to do a romantic film as the audience would not accept him in such a role.

Aditya Chopra and Yash Chopra somehow convinced Shah Rukh Khan to come on board for the film. The rest as they say, is history.

Warcraft movie review: A visual spectacle

So it may take a while for non-gamers to figure out who’s who in the battle of orcs and humans at the center of the ”Warcraft ” film, which complicates an already dense mythology. Once it becomes clear that there’s a civil war within the orc race about whether to eliminate or align with the humans, the big-screen adaptation from director and co-writer Duncan Jones is a little easier to understand.

For anyone unfamiliar with the fantasy game’s characters and story lines, ”Warcraft” is little more than eye candy, a visual spectacle with a backbone of well-trod genre tropes. There’s just no way to become as invested during a two-hour movie as a gamer who’s spent years, maybe even decades, immersed in the rituals and traditions of the worlds of ”Warcraft.”

Plus, the humanoid orcs rely on so much digital animation to come alive that at times the whole movie looks like a video game, which obviously suits the material here but can still take a little getting used to visually. (This critic’s screening was in IMAX 3-D.) And it is certainly a spectacle, with elaborate castles, armies of angry orcs and a villain who dramatically sucks the life from his victims, leaving them shriveled and deformed.

Voiceover at the start of the film explains that humans and orcs have been at war for ages. The orc planet is dying, so they’re out to colonize new territory, which they access when their ruler, Gul’dan (Daniel Wu), uses his powers to open a magic portal. The escaping orc clans storm in and kill everything. One clan leader, Durotan (Toby Kebbell), is a rebel. He questions Gul’dan’s destructive approach and suspects he may be relying on evil forces, which, of course, he is.

Orcs are invading the world of Azeroth when the leader of the humans, King Llane (Dominic Cooper), gets word of their imminent arrival. He turns to his top warrior, commander of Azeroth’s military forces Lothar (a smoldering Travis Fimmel), and top wizard, Guardian Medivh (Ben Foster), controller of Azeroth’s magical powers.

They capture an orc-human hybrid, Garona (Paula Patton wearing disturbing prosthetic teeth), who serves as a bridge between the two species – and instantly catches Lothar’s romantic eye.

Meanwhile, young magician Khadgar (Ben Schnetzer) endears himself to the operation when he discovers evidence of an evil force lurking in the human kingdom.

Containing this powerful energy is ultimately the theme of film, as it is of so many fantasy, superhero and sci-fi stories. It’s like the Force or the Ring or the Infinity Gauntlet or the Allspark. Only the force in ”Warcraft,” called ”the fell,” is purely wicked, so evil it can consume the good – perhaps an allusion to Biblical notions of ”the fall.”

The ”Warcraft” mythology is extensive and rich, as it would have to be to sustain five video games and a series of novels. That’s a lot of lore to pack into one movie, though this film is clearly set up for a sequel should the audience demand it.

Without the franchise backstory, ”Warcraft” is a big-budget fantasy-action film with lots of large-scale, epic fight scenes between Mr. Olympia-sized aliens and regular humans. When an orc throws a horse at one point, it’s almost more painful than when a character dies, since the moviegoer’s connection with the characters is so superficial.

As escapist summer fare, ”Warcraft” works because the action is ample and the orcs look cool, with pierced tusks and spiked armor evoking a ”Mad Max” aesthetic, even if it isn’t always easy to tell them apart.

”Warcraft,” a Legendary Pictures release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for ”extended sequences of intense fantasy violence.” Running time: 123 minutes. Two stars out of four.

Films like 'Sairat' gives us courage to compete with Hollywood: Irrfan

Actor Irrfan Khan says that films such as the Marathi blockbuster "Sairat" will give the Indian film industry the courage to compete with Hollywood.

"There is a need for our films to address universal audiences and this film is a new language. This film is an identity of the new cinema that will evolve and what the young generation will bring forth. These kind of films will give us the courage to compete with Hollywood films," he said on the sidelines of a screening of "Sairat" he organized.

Irrfan is one of the few Indian actors to do well in Hollywood, having worked in popular films such as "Slumdog Millionaire", and "Jurassic World" among others.

"Sairat" has become the highest grossing Marathi film of all time, having collected Rs.65 crores at the box office and is still going strong with 525 screens showcasing it in its fourth week.

About his reason for hosting the screening, Irrfan said: "I felt that our young generation watches a lot of Hollywood cinema and often doesn't watch our films. So I thought of organising this screening for all the kids' friends and close ones to give the young generation a taste of it to let them know what is happening in our cinema."

Asked if films like "Sairat" can even beat Hindi films, he said: "The more cinema gets diverse, it is better for the audience and for the growth of the industry. Our audiences are demanding a lot and our industry is unable to cope up with it. That is why Hollywood's films are earning so much money."

Lead actors of the film, Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar, have become overnight superstars, having been awarded Rs.5 crore each by the producers after the stellar success. About the actors, Irrfan said: "The way the director uses them in the story is fantastic and they have done a fantastic job."

About director Nagraj Manjule, whose first film "Fandry" was also immensely appreciated, Irrfan said: "For a new director, who makes his first film and it turns out good, making the second film is equally difficult because whatever treasures he had gets exposed. Making the second film so successful is the most difficult thing for any successful director and that Nagraj has done, and I salute him."

Irrfan will next be seen in the film "Madaari".
